  4. MEXICALI, Mexico -- Ivan Stewart of Alpine, Calif., climaxed his best
  5. season ever in off-road racing Friday night in the midst of a mob of
  6. 15,000 cheering Mexican fans as overall winner of the Tecate SCORE Baja
  7. 1000.

  9. Stewart not only was declared overall 4-wheel champion in his Toyota
  10. Special, he also beat all the motorcycle competitors as well with an
  11. elapsed time of 13 hours 29 minutes 11 seconds for an average speed of
  12. 56.531 mph.

  14. The motorcycle champion Kawasaki team of Danny Hamel, Boulder City,
  15. Nev., Larry Roeseler and Ty Davis, Hesperia, Calif., was timed in
  16. 13:57:23, averaging 54.627 mph.

  18. The huge crowds were as much of a story as the difficulty of the
  19. 762.4-mile course, which prevented all by 24 percent (70) of the 250
  20. entrants from finishing.  Tough terrain was complicated by sporadic
  21. downpours that turned high speed stretches like Diablo Dry Lake into
  22. skating rinks.  Police estimated that mroe than 400,000 persons saw some
  23. parts of the race.

  25. Bob Gordon, Orange, Calif., and Frank Arciero Jr., Laguna Hills, Calif.,
  26. finished second to Stewart mor than an hour behind.

  28. Undecided class championships were wrapped up byt third-place-finishing
  29. Rob MacCachren, class 8 trucks; Dan Smith and Dave Ashley, 4-wheel drive
  30. classes.
